Success Story: Dropping 2 Dress Sizes

June 18, 2013 by Physique 57

Shelly S. became a fan of the Physique 57 monthly challenges but struggled with completing them.  It wasn’t until she planned a vacation to Maui that she found that extra motivation to complete each scheduled workout. Here, she shares her story (and bikini photo) with us!

I first read about Physique 57 years ago in a magazine featuring Kelly Ripa on the cover.  She credited her amazing body to working out at your studios.  At that time the DVDs were not available yet and, living in Canada, I could not attend classes but I was determined to find some way to do the workouts at home.  I found this video online  of Tanya Becker doing 7 Physique exercises so I started doing those at home in addition to running.  I was so excited when the DVDs finally came out!  I made some great progress in the first few months but then stopped doing it regularly because of pregnancies and other reasons and went back to my old standby of endless running and very little strength training.

When Physique 57 started coming out with the monthly challenges, I immediately got on board.  I tried at least 4 or 5 times to complete one, but I always gave up when I got to a day that included both a 57 minute and 30 minute workout!  Those are tough!  An upcoming trip to Maui was just the motivation I needed, however, to complete the April challenge.  After the first week, I was not as sore as I used to be doing back to back workouts and I actually looked forward to it.  I posted the schedule up on my wall and every time I finished the workout for the day, I would cross it off.  That gave me a great sense of accomplishment to see so many check marks!  I also noticed I was sleeping longer and better and actually had more energy, especially on the rest days. I even dropped 2 sizes, going from a size 6 to a size 2!

The before picture is me in the height of my running days - you can't even tell I had just completed a half marathon! The after picture is me in Maui a few weeks ago, fresh off completing the April challenge.

Thank you, Physique 57!

Shelly S.

How To Stay in Shape While on Vacation

May 23, 2013 by Physique 57

As summer approaches, we asked one of our NY instructors, Katie Mitchell, to guest post and share some tips on how to stay in shape while on vacation.

Working out can be quite a challenge when you’re on vacation! I just got back from a trip to Miami and had to get very creative fitting both my workouts and quality family time into my schedule. If you’re hoping to stay on the wagon while on your vacation, here are a few simple tips to get you going.

1.  Schedule your workouts into your trip. Research the area and see if your favorite studio has a location there.  Or maybe there’s a workout you’ve been dying to try that has a location there?  If you sign yourself up for a class, you are more likely to commit to the workout.

2. Pack your favorite workout DVD or try an online workout.  Physique 57 has some fabulous exercise DVDS!   Do your research to make sure that if your DVD requires any equipment, you pack accordingly. Also, if you know you cannot commit to an hour DVD, look for our 30 minute workouts.  If you will have internet access, check out our online workouts!

3. Find a workout buddy. Workout buddies can be a great motivation for sticking to a planned sweat session.
4. Pack your sneakers. They take up quite a bit of room in your suitcase, so chances are if you make the space for them, you will make space in your schedule to use them. Walking around new cities is always a great way to see and explore new spots.

5. Explore the area and see what fun activities you can find. Try, for example, hiking, snorkeling, surfing, skiing, snow boarding, bike riding, rock climbing... Whatever it is, trying something new can be a fun way to spice up your workout! Also these kinds of activities are a great way to see the beauty of the natural landscape. Some of my favorite outdoor activities to do with visitors in New York are walking the Brooklyn Bridge and renting bikes to ride around Central Park.

For more tips, join Katie Mitchell on Facebook for a Live Q&A tomorrow, May 24th from 12pm-1pm ET. We look forward to chatting with you then!

Focus on Form: Thigh Dancing

May 20, 2013 by Physique 57

Thigh dancing is one of our most loved signature moves.  Not only is it a ton of fun but thigh dancing will whittle your waistline and stoke your metabolic rate!

Muscles Targeted:
Quadriceps, core

How to:
1) On a mat or carpeted surface, sit on your heels in a kneeling position. Your knees should be hips width apart.
2) Lift your seat 1-2 inches off your heels. Keep your torso upright with your hands on your hips.
3) Once you are in the position, begin a small lift up and down making sure to keep your seat just 1-2 inches OFF your heels the whole time. You can shake, circle and/or tuck your hips while coordinating movement with your arms.

Helpful Tip:
This exercise is definitely one of our most intense but it can also be a lot of fun.  Play your favorite song and try to "thigh dance" it out for 60 seconds!  Just let go, let the music inspire your body and allow the burn to fuel your energy.  You'll love the results!

Do you have additional questions about Thigh Dancing? Ask us in the comments below.
